Embracing Timeless Elegance: Transforming an 1850's Home into a Modern Haven

Our design process

Welcome to my latest blog post, where I'll take you through the initial stages in developing the design for a charming client and their 1850's kitchen. Our mission was to bring a clean modern aesthetic to the mid-90s Tuscan design while incorporating eclectic patterns and existing antiques. This project was a dream come true for us, as I love to seamlessly blend the past and the present, creating a space that celebrates the home's history while embracing all of the benefits and beauty of clean modern design.

Drawing Inspiration from the Past:

Inspiration for this project came from the era's furniture design. The warm wood tones and intricate textures and patterns of stained glass served as my guiding light. The client had recently purchased a beautiful Spanish chest of drawers and wanted to integrate it into the design. It was an easy decision to preserve the historical charm. The space has exposed fieldstone walls and shares a wall with a 2-story massive fieldstone fireplace -- a feature that makes this 1850's home truly special. The challenge in a home with so much history is to infuse it with a fresh, contemporary vibe that looks seamless and not out of place.

Moorish influence on Stained Glass from the mid-1800s

Above are several examples of stained glass windows and furniture door designs from the mid-1800s. The furniture often featured heavily carved wood and stained glass doors. Stained glass was often inset into the doors. With limited access to large pieces of glass, patterns featured small pieces that were easier to handle. Faceted rectangles, diamonds, and stars were geometric shapes that could be easily cut and fitted together into intricate patterns.

Designing with Purpose:

Our design process began with a deep understanding of how the clients use their space. There was a large 6' long pantry hiding a large ugly access panel in the ceiling that made the galley kitchen feel tight. By analyzing the layout, the architecture, and talking with the clients' about how they want to use the space, we knew we could develop a design that honored the home's rich history while introducing modern functionality for our clients' needs. The balance between the two was crucial to our approach, ensuring that every element harmoniously blended old-world charm with new-age sophistication.

Simplifying the Foundational Elements:

A pivotal design element in my vision was using hard surfaces that were timeless. Quartzite stone for the counters in a warm greige, simplified cabinet moulding and crown, walnut wood-effect-tile floors (heated, yay!) and a color palette inspired by William Morris set the tone for our design. By streamlining these elements, and using timeless materials, the space retained a degree of sophistication that seamlessly blends the past with the present. These selections not only modernize the space but also celebrate the exquisite craftsmanship of the home's history.

Embracing Eclectic Patterns and Antiques:

One of the most exciting aspects of this project was the opportunity to incorporate eclectic patterns and one-of-a-kind antiques. We curated a collection of lighting, upholstery, pillows, window treatments and accessories. These essential elements add individuality to the kitchen, reflecting the homeowner's personality and love of unique bold design.

Creating a Cohesive Whole:

Throughout the design process, I worked collaboratively to ensure every aspect of the project contributed to the cohesive whole that my clients' dreamed of creating. From thoughtfully selected color palettes to meticulously curated lighting fixtures, every detail plays a vital role in harmonizing the overall theme. The result is a kitchen design that feels welcoming, and uniquely true to my clients' hopes and wishes for their kitchen.

The Breathtaking Transformation:

As the final touches on the design came together, the once dated 1990s granite counters and tumbled tile floor gave way to a blank slate where the final approved design can come to life! We are currently in the midst of a breathtaking transformation. I cannot wait to share the additional custom items we have in store!

Conclusion:

We are immensely proud of the new life we've breathed into this historic home's kitchen. This project exemplifies our dedication to creating spaces that are as functional as they are aesthetically pleasing, spaces that celebrate the home's past while embracing the present.
